How It Works

How Polyurethane Foam Injection Works

Polyurethane foam lifting — sometimes called polyjacking — is one of the most significant advances in concrete repair in the past several decades. Here’s how the process works:

Step 1: Small Holes Are Drilled

Our technicians drill small holes — typically about the diameter of a penny — through the sunken concrete panel. These holes are placed strategically to allow foam to reach the voids beneath the slab.

Step 2: Foam Is Injected Beneath the Slab

A two-part polyurethane compound is pumped through the holes under low pressure. When the two parts combine beneath the slab, they react and expand rapidly, filling voids in the soil and generating controlled upward pressure that lifts the concrete.

Step 3: The Concrete Is Raised

As the foam expands, the concrete panel above is lifted back toward its original grade. Our technicians monitor the lift carefully in real time to achieve an accurate and uniform result.

Step 4: Holes Are Patched

Once the slab is at the correct elevation, the small injection holes are patched with a concrete mix that blends with the existing surface. The repair is barely noticeable from normal viewing distance.

Step 5: Low Down Time

Unlike concrete replacement, polyurethane foam cures rapidly. Many lifted surfaces can be used very soon after installation is complete.

Concrete Lifting or Replacement: Which Is Right?

Can my existing concrete be saved?

Concrete lifting can be an efficient alternative to replacement when the existing slab remains largely intact but has settled because of voids or changes in the supporting soil.

Replacement may be the better option when the concrete is severely cracked, crumbling, deteriorated, too thin, or otherwise unable to be lifted as a stable section. Concrete lifting also will not erase existing surface cracks or restore deteriorated concrete.

Moran Construction evaluates the condition of the slab before recommending either approach.

Sometimes. The slab must be sufficiently intact to move as a stable section. Lifting may improve its elevation, but existing cracks will usually remain visible.

Many polyurethane-lifted surfaces can return to use the same day. Timing depends on the application, slab condition and product specifications.

The foam fills voids and restores support beneath the slab. Continuing drainage, erosion or soil movement may still need to be corrected.

It is often less disruptive and may cost less, but pricing depends on the size, condition, access and amount of material required. Moran should evaluate both options before making that comparison.
